Todd James - "Soldier of Fortune" at NANZUKA UNDERGROUND

von @industrialkonzept Team

American artist Todd James presents his new solo exhibition "Soldier of Fortune" at NANZUKA UNDERGROUND in Tokyo, Japan. This exhibition is James' fourth at the gallery, following his last exhibition in Tokyo four years ago. The exhibition revolves around James' first major sculptural work, a bronze sculpture called "Pentagon Pile Up", which depicts fused fighter planes and tanks that have lost their combat function. This work is a caricatured critique of the military-industrial complex and warns of the mental and physical effects of warmongering.

Versatility and uniqueness: what makes the exhibition special

In addition to the sculpture, the exhibition also includes paintings by James depicting military themes that have appeared in his work for decades, as well as small works on paper. Although he has transitioned from street art to studio art, recently favoring acrylics, he sometimes incorporates spray paint into his works to give them a playful and rebellious quality. James draws inspiration from abstract artwork and cartoons from the 50s, which is reflected in his colorful and vibrant compositions. In addition, the exhibition will feature a limited edition miniature work that will be available in NANZUKA's online store. The collector's item is limited to 350 pieces and was produced for James' ongoing solo exhibition "Soldier Of Fortune" at NANZUKA UNDERGROUND. It is a small soft vinyl replica of James' large bronze sculpture "Pentagon Pile Up", which is the centerpiece of the exhibition.
