About the manufacturer
Gerard Philips (1858-1942) established his own lightbulb factory in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in 1891 after being impressed by Thomas Edison's demonstrations. The company grew rapidly and became Europe's largest carbon filament manufacturer. In 1912 Philips signed a historic contract with Tsar Nicholas I and in 1914 became an export-oriented company. In 1925 designer Louis Kalff joined the company and designed some iconic products. In the 1990s, Philips collaborated with Alessi to develop a colorful household collection. Today the company has a team of 500 designers and focuses on experiences and digital technologies.
