Limited Resources: Unlimited Gradients

Natural hues, rough yet sheer surfaces, synthesize a new aesthetic born of attunement. In a slow, intentional rhythm that resists the industrial pace in favor of the artisanal, the sensorial, the cognitive, biomaterials reset the terms of engagement.

 

Natural Material Studio, founded by Bonnie Hvillum, practices a material-based approach that is transdisciplinary, extending across the fields of biology, chemistry, design, and art. The studio’s biodegradable and circular materials, created from discarded or underutilized natural resources, are more than functional alternatives. They can be perceived as material gradients with unlimited applications, unbounded by rigid categories. Their application challenges the binary of utility and beauty, offering instead a layered, evolving narrative of spatial design.




White Utopia
, presented at 3 Days of Design in Copenhagen, demonstrates a living space: a fossil-free installation where all elements, including wall partitions, furniture, and lighting, emerge from the same base material. This material, derived from a specific natural protein and blended with chalk for strength and a plant-based softener for flexibility, is formed with coherence at every scale.

 


To feel space as relative is to acknowledge that it is not separate from us. Responsive by nature, the materials expand or soften in moist, warm conditions, and contract or stiffen in colder, drier ones.


This inherent adaptability reflects a true interaction with the environment. The material communicates a sense of familiarity through its resilience. In this way, spatial design becomes an active participant.
