The big departure

From Weimar into the world – the Bauhaus myth

In a short period of just fourteen years between the two world wars, the German art and design school Bauhaus changed the face of modernism. With utopian ideals for the future, she developed a groundbreaking fusion of art, craft and technology, which she implemented across all creative media and methods, from film to theater, from sculpture to pottery.

This reference work was created in collaboration with the Bauhaus Archive/Museum for Design in Berlin, the world's largest collection on the history of the Bauhaus. Over 250 new photographs, writings, studies, sketches, plans and models not only document the completed works, they also bring the spirit of Bauhaus to life again. From casual shots of group gymnastics to drawings from Paul Klee's class, from detailed construction plans to a sleek ashtray by Marianne Brandt - they are all testament to an idealistic creative community that was determined to completely rethink design and create a better future for modern people to shape people.

The book shows Bauhaus not only as a groundbreaking movement of modernism, but also as a model of art education in which creative expression and pioneering ideas led to products that were beautiful and functional at the same time. This handy edition introduces artists such as Josef Albers, Marianne Brandt, Walter Gropius, Gertrud Grunow, Paul Klee, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Lilly Reich and many others.
