Putxet House by Cirera Studio: Mediterranean Essence Reimagined

by @industrialkonzept Team

Located in the quiet Putxet neighborhood of Barcelona, this house, originally built in 1947, has been carefully renovated by Cirera Studio with a focus on maintaining its historical essence while adapting it to contemporary living. The project respects the original multi-level distribution of the home, allowing for an organic integration of interior and exterior spaces. The result is a residence that feels both timeless and functional, where the Mediterranean influence is reflected in material choices, colors, and spatial transitions.

The renovation follows a clear aesthetic direction, rooted in the principles of Mediterranean architecture. Warm, natural tones define the interiors, with terracotta and sand hues creating a cohesive atmosphere. The connection between inside and outside plays a central role in the design, with large windows and direct access to terraces ensuring a continuous dialogue with the surroundings. This interplay of light and space enhances the home’s openness, while carefully selected materials bring a tactile quality to the interiors.

The central living area, positioned on the main level, is designed as an open-plan space that integrates the kitchen and dining area. This part of the house benefits from its location, receiving abundant natural light through expansive openings that connect directly to two primary terraces. The transition between these spaces is seamless, reinforcing a sense of openness while maintaining defined functional areas. The upper level of the home is dedicated to private quarters, with a hallway leading to the main bedroom suite and a children’s room. The primary suite has direct access to the terrace, a feature that further strengthens the home’s connection to its outdoor spaces.

One of the defining architectural elements of the renovation is a custom-designed iron staircase that connects the different levels of the house. Beyond its practical function, this piece serves as a sculptural element within the interior, introducing a contemporary and industrial contrast to the otherwise warm and organic palette. It leads to the uppermost part of the home, where a workspace and secondary living area have been arranged, both with access to the upper terrace. The multi-level layout is structured to allow for fluid movement between spaces, optimizing natural light and ventilation throughout the home.

Cirera Studio, founded by Cristina Cirera in 2020, approaches interior design with a focus on balance—between history and modernity, between materiality and space, and between functionality and aesthetics. With a background in architecture and design spanning multiple cities and disciplines, Cirera’s work is defined by an attention to detail and a nuanced understanding of how spaces are lived in. This project is no exception, as it carefully integrates the home’s original character with a contemporary sensibility, creating an environment that feels both refined and inviting.
