The luminaire was originally designed. St. Catherine's College was inaugurated in 1963 and designed by Arne Jacobsen in a modernist architectural style that contrasts with the otherwise classical architecture of the surrounding Oxford University. The AJ Oxford table lamp was originally designed as a permanently installed luminaire for the college's impressive dining hall, which seats 350 people with its long rows of oak tables. While the lamps on the tables form the focal point, clerestory windows provide natural lighting. AJ Eklipta wall lights are also mounted on the walls, creating diffuse general lighting. The luminaire can still be found today at St. Catherine's College, which continues to be used for both teaching and as a student residence. Similar to the AJ luminaire series, the AJ Oxford has a slender rod that transitions seamlessly into the round base. With its graphic style and monochrome color palette, the timeless AJ Oxford table lamp fits effortlessly into any home. The table lamp is available in various versions with or without a metal shade and in two different heights. The smaller lamp is the ideal choice when space is limited – for example, on a shelf or windowsill. The taller version is also available as a screw-mounted lamp in homage to Arne Jacobsen's original design.
