Great Women Photographers

Great Women Photographers documents the contribution women have made to photography since its beginnings, covering nearly 200 years and more than 250 photographers worldwide. It runs from Anna Atkins, who made the first photobook in 1843, and Felicia Ewurasi Abban, the first professional woman photographer in 1950s Ghana, across documentary work, portraiture, fashion, conceptual art and photocollage.

The book is arranged alphabetically, and each photographer is shown with one reproduced image and a short text. Well-known names such as Diane Arbus, Dorothea Lange, Nan Goldin, Cindy Sherman and Francesca Woodman appear beside less familiar ones. Compiled by the Phaidon Editors with an introduction by Fiona Rogers and a panel of curatorial advisors including Phillip Prodger and Charmaine Toh, the hardback has 288 pages.
