With 36 prototype designs, the Case Study House programme set out models for modern living whose influence reached far beyond Los Angeles. The houses were conceived as affordable homes for the postwar years, and the architects involved included Richard Neutra, Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen.
This introduction in TASCHEN’s Basic Architecture series presents each of the model houses and its architects in 150 photographs and plans. The author, Elizabeth A. T. Smith, curated the 1989 exhibition Blueprints for Modern Living on the Case Study Houses at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. Peter Gössel edited the volume.
