Øivind Slaatto designed Patera in 2015 as a modern take on the crystal chandelier. The sphere is built from small diamond-shaped cells arranged after the Fibonacci sequence, so its pattern changes as you move around it. Slaatto described the task as a kind of three-dimensional Sudoku.
Each cell is angled to catch the light and to shield the light source from view above 45 degrees, so every cell glows. Below that angle the cells open and direct light downwards, while a small part reaches the ceiling. The result is glare-free light in all directions. The shade is cut from matt white PVC foil.
A single Patera forms a focal point over a dining table or in a living room; several can be grouped in one or more sizes. Available in Ø 30, 45, 60 and 90 cm with E27 socket and, from Ø 45 cm, with integrated LED in 2700 K or 3000 K, controlled via DALI or Bluetooth.
