Vilhelm Lauritzen designed the VL 38 in the late 1930s together with Louis Poulsen for Radiohuset, the Danish Broadcasting House in Copenhagen, today the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Like the VL 45 pendant from the same building, it appeared in Louis Poulsen's catalogues from the mid-1940s. The white version returned in 2016, a black version with a stronger outline followed in 2017.
The shade can be tilted to direct the light where it is needed; its white painted inside keeps the light soft. Base and shade are aluminium, the stem is untreated brushed brass that develops a patina over time. An integrated LED replaces the original bulb, with two light levels and an optional switch-off timer after four or eight hours.
At 38 cm high, it suits desks, bedside tables and hallways. Available in white and black.

Care
| Aluminium | Clean with a soft cloth, lukewarm water and a mild detergent, then dry. Avoid abrasive sponges and acidic or alkaline cleaners. Raw aluminium may darken slightly over time. |
|---|---|
| Brass | Untreated brass develops a natural patina. Dust with a dry cloth; to restore the shine use a brass polish. Lacquered brass only needs a soft, dry cloth. |
