Paulo Mendes da Rocha
Paulo Mendes da Rocha (1928-2021) was a renowned Brazilian architect and designer, recognized internationally for his modernist and humanistic approach to architecture. His career spanned over 50 years, during which he created sincere, daring, and imaginative works. A graduate of Mackenzie University in São Paulo, Mendes da Rocha established his own firm in 1955 and gained attention with projects like the São Paulo Athletic Club and the Paulistano armchair. His style, influenced by figures like Oscar Niemeyer and Affonso Eduardo Reidy, emphasized simplicity, frugality, and elegance.
Mendes da Rocha's notable works include the Brazilian Pavilion at the 1970 Osaka Expo and the renovation of São Paulo's Pinacoteca Museum, for which he won the Mies van der Rohe Prize in 2000. His designs often involved minimal intervention, focusing on creating viable, suitable environments for human life. Throughout his career, he maintained a consistent modernist vision, aimed at shaping a better future.
