Plucked from the dream world, the surrealist artistry of the armchair MAgriTTA plays with perception. An English bowler hat and an apple, crafted in bright colors and exaggerated proportions, tilt and engage the observer. These magnified symbols, recurring in René Magritte's imagery, come to life in this visionary project by Chilean painter Roberto Matta, a key figure in 20th-century Surrealist art.
MAgriTTA combines curious and absurd elements into a balanced seat: a structured form enclosing a soft polyurethane cushion covered with elastic bouclé wool. Its striking color scheme—deep black and bright green—reflects Matta's original design from nearly fifty years ago. Contemporary editions include MAgriTTA Rouge in deep red and MAgriTTA Jaune in golden yellow.
With MAgriTTA, Matta pays tribute to René Magritte, a major figure in 20th-century surrealism. Inspired by Magritte's 1964 painting "Son of Man," Matta integrates the apple into the hat itself. The name MAgriTTA merges their last names, symbolizing this synthesis.
By juxtaposing an apple and a hat, MAgriTTA invites reflection: What is real? What is imagined? What defines furniture? This questioning spirit echoes the heart of radical Italian design: challenging norms and embracing the unexpected.
